A recent Harvard-Harris College poll found that most people believe there should have been “more competition” to replace President Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential election because Democratic leaders essentially selected Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic base.
investigation Asked Respondents were asked whether “there should have been more competition to nominate Biden’s successor, or whether it was more important to rally behind Vice President Harris and show unity?”
Overall, 57% said there “should have been more competition” to nominate Biden’s successor, while 43% disagreed, arguing that “it is important to show unity and show solidarity under Harris.”
Looking at party breakdown, more than a quarter of Democrats (27%) believe there “should have been more competition” in choosing Biden’s successor, along with majorities of Republicans and independents (85% and 60%, respectively).
Meanwhile, 73% of Democrats say it’s important to show unity and rally behind Harris, but only 40% of independents and 15% of Republicans agree.
But with recent polls suggesting Democrats wanted Biden out of the race, 71% believe his withdrawal shows he has “listened to the voters,” though 29% disagree, saying the move is “undemocratic and goes against the will of the 14 million voters who supported Biden in the Democratic primary earlier this year.”

The survey was conducted among 2,196 registered voters from July 26 to 28, 2024. Democratic Party leaders have effectively crowned Harris as Biden’s successor, even though not a single Democratic voter voted for her as their first choice.
The lack of enthusiasm was on full display last week when Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) spoke out strongly in support of Harris.
“Now that there’s been a grassroots, bottom-up process, we’re here today endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris,” Schumer declared excitedly, clapping his hands, apparently unaware that no grassroots process had unfolded because no one had nominated Harris for the Democratic presidential nomination.
That aside, no one applauded after that remark, so Schumer awkwardly added, “I’m clapping. You don’t have to.”

At another moment, Schumer announced that Harris had secured a majority of the delegates, triumphantly declaring, “She has defeated Donald Trump and will be the next president of the United States.”
Again, when he heard no applause, he pointed at the audience, shook his finger, and asked, “Clap?” No one applauded.
