ESPN “SportsCenter” anchor Elle Duncan suffered a “major defeat.”

Duncan publicly apologized to Swoopes the next day, explaining that he had not been able to hear Swoopes’ comments in their entirety before publicly discussing them on his show.

“I did something I shouldn’t have done. I responded to Sheryl Swoopes’ comments about Caitlin Clark based on a quote from The Rundown that a producer pulled for me.” Duncan wrote about X on Friday. “I should have listened to the show. [Swoopes’ podcast].

“The same thing I pleaded with CC fans a few months ago when they were attacking me for “hating” her. I hate that I sent even more vicious words towards her and I accept this big defeat!”

“I sent the same message to Cheryl: I’ll try harder! I’m sorry.”

“No, it’s not the producers’ fault. They put the whole show together so it’s the talent’s responsibility to do their research.” She said“This is because I was in a hurry. I didn’t take the time to think it through, I just reacted. This is my defeat.”

“This is not their fault.” In another post, Duncan wrote:“The podcast outline is basically a collection of notes. I should have done the research myself. It’s my voice and I need to be responsible for what comes out of it.”

On Thursday’s show, Duncan took issue with Swoopes’ comments about the WNBA Rookie of the Year race and how Clark and Sky star Angel Reese — also a Rookie of the Year candidate — could affect their respective teams’ playoff chances.

Here’s what Swoopes said, quoted by Duncan on his show: “I don’t know if Chicago can make the playoffs right now without the Angels. [Reese]So… can Indiana make the playoffs without Caitlin? … If you look at the team as a whole, the players, Indiana has better players from top to bottom than Chicago, no question about it.”

It was. Fragments of a larger conversation During the segment, Swoopes and co-host Jordan Liggons Robinson explained the WNBA’s ROTY selections.

Swoopes selected Reese, while Robinson selected Clark, who was the Fever’s No. 1 overall pick in this year’s WNBA draft.

Swoopes has been a supporter of Reese since before the Sky selected her with the seventh overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft.

“I love her, but she’s wrong,” Duncan said of Swoopes. “… She had some thoughts. She had some thoughts about Caitlyn before. She had to apologize later.” [for] These thoughts are uninformed and tend to be a bit inflammatory and judgmental without any real analysis.

“she I apologized for that. During the women’s college season, she doubled down on this statement by saying, “Indiana is in the playoffs without Caitlin Clark.” [Fever forward] In terms of two-way ability, Katie Lou Samuelson is really more important than Kaitlyn.

“… I’m not sure what it is or why I’m not connecting with Cheryl… This doesn’t feel right at all and it’s starting to feel like a lot of hate from Cheryl that’s stuck in this particular space.

“If the Fever, who only won a few games last year, make the playoffs this year, a big reason for that will be Caitlin Clark and [Fever forward] “Aaliyah Boston”

Swoopes never said Samuelson was more valuable than Clark.

She also praised Clarke multiple times.

“Kaitlyn, her passing, her assists are incredible! Her ability to see the floor and get the ball where it needs to be is just chef’s kiss, beautiful!” Swoopes said:
