Dodgers star Freddie Freeman announces son, 3, battling ‘especially rare’ neurological condition

Los Angeles Dodgers star Freddie Freeman and his wife, Chelsea, have been through “the most difficult and scary days of our lives” this week.

The couple announced on Instagram that their three-year-old son Max has been diagnosed with a “severe” form of Guillain-Barré syndrome, which is “particularly rare in children.”

This disease causes the immune system to attack the nerves, causing muscle weakness.

In a joint post, the couple detailed their terrifying experience.

“Last Friday, Max’s condition rapidly deteriorated and he became completely paralyzed.” the couple wrote. “We were very lucky to get him to the hospital in time to have his lungs strengthened. Freddie was in Houston at the time and got on the first flight home…

“These have been the most difficult and frightening days of our lives. Maximus is a very special boy and has fought so hard. It will be a long road to recovery but we are confident he will make a full recovery.”

The Freemans say their son has made “amazing progress in the last 48 hours.”

“Yesterday, Maximus was removed from his breathing tube and taken off the ventilator. This is a huge victory for us,” they wrote.

“We believe in the power of prayer and have witnessed the miracle of his recovery. Please continue to pray for Maximus and our family. We are truly grateful and feel your support.”

Max has two older brothers, Charlie and Brandon, who was born via surrogacy and is six weeks older than Max.

Freeman is in his third year with the Dodgers after spending his first 12 seasons with the Atlanta Braves, winning the World Series in his final game with the team in 2021. He signed a six-year contract with Los Angeles.

He’s batting .288 with an OPS of .888.
