It’s official: Vice President Kamala Harris goes over the top and clinches Democratic presidential nomination

Vice President Kamala Harris officially secured the Democratic nomination for the 2024 presidential election on Friday, with the Democratic National Committee (DNC) announcing that she has secured a majority of delegate votes for the party’s next national convention.

“We are incredibly proud to announce that Vice President Harris has received more than half of the votes from all convention delegates and will be the Democratic nominee when the polls close on Monday,” Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison said in a statement.

“I am honored to be selected as the presumptive Democratic nominee for president of the United States,” Harris said in a conference call with supporters on Friday.

She emphasized that “the tireless efforts of our delegation, state leaders and staff have been crucial in making this moment possible.”

The news came during the Democratic National Committee’s virtual roll call for the nomination, which began Thursday and will continue through Monday.

While Ms. Harris’ nomination was never in doubt — only the vice-presidential position was on the presidential nomination list — it would be a historic moment in the nation’s history for her to become the first woman of color to lead a major party’s national campaign.

One of those five Democrats could be Harris’ running mate.

While delegates are formally voting remotely, the Democratic National Convention has announced that a ceremonial roll call will take place at the convention, scheduled to begin in Chicago on August 19.

Harris’ nomination comes less than two weeks after President Biden’s shock announcement that he is ending his 2024 reelection campaign against former Republican President Trump.

The shocking news for Biden comes amid growing pressure from within his Democratic Party to step down after his disastrous performance in the first presidential debate with Trump last month. Biden, 81, The awkward, stumbling speech raised questions about his physical and mental ability to serve another four years in the White House.

But Biden’s immediate endorsement of Harris sparked a surge in her support from Democratic governors, senators, representatives and other party leaders. Within 36 hours, Harris had announced she had secured the party’s nomination with the verbal endorsement of a majority of the convention’s roughly 4,000 delegates.

With Harris’ nomination out of the question, speculation has raged over the past week and a half about who the vice president might choose as his running mate. Harris’ campaign announced that the vice president and his soon-to-be running mate would tour seven key battleground states, starting in Pennsylvania on Tuesday.

Democratic National Committee rules allow Harris to name her running mate after the virtual roll call for presidential nominations ends at 6pm ET on Monday.

According to the DNC, the convention chair will declare that candidate as the party’s vice presidential nominee.
