United States women’s soccer advances to Olympics semifinal with extra-time win over Japan

The U.S. women’s soccer team defeated Japan 1-0 in extra time on Saturday to advance to the semifinals of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Trinity Rodman scored the game’s only goal in extra time.

The U.S. came into the match undefeated in a group stage match, having outscored their opponents 9-2. Despite the U.S. dominating possession, Japan played solid defense and kept both teams scoreless until extra time.

Mallory Swanson, who led the women’s team in goals so far this tournament with three, had the best chances for the U.S. in the second half but was unable to score.

The United States made numerous passing errors and missed chances, failing to show their usual crisp play.

The U.S. and Japan have a history of competing against each other on the big stage: Japan beat the U.S. in the 2011 Women’s World Cup final. The following year, the U.S. beat Japan in the 2012 Olympic final to win the gold medal.

The U.S. also beat Japan in the 2015 World Cup, with Carli Lloyd scoring three goals in the opening 16 minutes of the game.

The Olympics are over for Japan, who lost to Sweden in the quarterfinals, just like they did in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The United States came one step closer to winning a medal at the Tokyo Olympics, winning the bronze medal despite losing to Canada in the semifinals.

The U.S. will face the winner of the match between Germany and Canada in the semifinals. The U.S. defeated Germany 4-1 in the group stage.

The semi-finals will take place on August 6th at 12pm ET.
