Guram Tushishvili was disqualified from the Olympics for kicking another athlete in the groin after losing a judo match.

On Friday, Riner defeated Tushishvili by ippon, the highest score in judo, in a knockout match in the over 100 kg weight class.

After the bout, Tusishvili responded by lightly kicking and stepping on Linell’s groin, and also put his hands on Linell’s head after flipping him to the ground.

Tushishvili received the harshest punishment for his actions – a red card.

Despite his loss to Riner, Tushishvili would have been able to compete in the bronze medal match, but the IJF ruling has banned the Georgian judoka from all future individual events until the decision is finalized. Tushishvili will also be unable to compete in Saturday’s mixed team event.

In the gold medal match, Riner defeated South Korea’s Kim Min-jung by submission to win her third gold medal at the tournament, following wins in 2012 and 2016.
