Nancy Pelosi denies making calls to organize Democrat coup against Biden

Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi has denied allegations that she made the calls to plot a Democratic coup that ultimately forced President Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential race.

Speaker Pelosi was questioned about her role in the pressure campaign in an interview with CBS on Saturday.

“No, I was not the leader of any pressure [campaign]Pelosi told CBS: “Let me say what I didn’t do. I didn’t call anybody. I didn’t call anybody. I could have always told him, ‘I didn’t call anybody.'”

“He knows I love him very much,” she said, refusing to say any more about the matter.

Pelosi ignores Biden’s decision to continue campaign, latest sign of rift in Democratic Party

Panic spread within the Democratic Party after Biden’s disastrous performance in the debate with former President Trump in June. After that, a flurry of information leaked from within the party attacking the former president’s age and mental capacity led lawmakers to publicly call for Biden to withdraw.

Throughout this time, every leading Democrat publicly supported Biden, even as they frequently said he faced difficult decisions.

“It’s up to the president whether he wants to run,” Pelosi told MSNBC at the time. “Time is running out and we’re all urging the president to make a decision. The overwhelming support of the caucus is not for me to say. I’m no longer head of the caucus, but the president is loved and respected and the people want him to make the decision, not me.”

Pelosi said she was “confident that Biden will lose” and was “on the phone negotiating to get Biden voted out of the election.”

At the time, many Democratic Party leaders, including former President Barack Obama, were reportedly moving to oppose Biden.

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy alleged that Ms Pelosi and Mr Obama were responsible for “pulling the strings behind the scenes” of the effort to oust Mr Biden.

Pelosi also spoke directly to Biden at the time, telling him bluntly that polls showed Biden would lose to Trump, which would be a disaster for House Democrats.

Biden fired back, saying he saw polls that showed he could win, a source told CNN.

Another source said Biden had become defensive about the polls, and at one point Pelosi called Mike Donilon, a longtime Biden adviser, asking to discuss the data.

A spokesman for Pelosi’s office declined to comment on the conversation at the time.
