Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Sunday mocked former President Trump’s choice of Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) as his running mate.
Asked in an interview on CBS’ “Sunday Morning” if the selection was a mistake, Pelosi laughed and said, “It was a great choice.”
Some Republicans have criticized Vance’s selection as the GOP nominee, arguing that the freshman senator is not the talent the party needs to win the presidential election in November.
Democrats have attacked Vance for his staunch opposition to abortion rights and comments he has made about families with children, simply labelling him a “nutcase.”
Pelosi later described the senator as “intimidating.”
Since being nominated at the Republican National Convention, Vance has struggled on the campaign trail and suffered low approval ratings.
The selection was criticized for emphasizing many of Trump’s policies, including some that are less popular with the public, rather than pursuing his usual strategy of seeking “balance” as a presidential candidate.
Vance confronted the criticism head-on on Sunday, rejecting the idea that Trump made a mistake.
“I know there are many in the mainstream Republican Party and on the far left who are not happy that Donald Trump chose me,” Vance said on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.”
“I actually take their criticism as a badge of honor. Of course the media is going to attack the people they fear the most,” he continued. “I think the media is going to attack the people who can most effectively communicate President Trump’s message to a broader base of voters.”
