Josh Shapiro, Tim Walz: Most Americans have never heard of possible Harris VP picks

Who’s the governor? What’s the name of the senator?

The leading contenders for the Democratic presidential nomination and to serve as Harris’ running mate are Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. If these names are unfamiliar to you, consider yourself part of the vast majority of Americans who don’t know or have never heard of any Democrats who could potentially be the next vice president. The survey found that of the three candidates vying for the White House’s No. 2 job, Kerry had the highest favorability rating, with 31% favorable and 18% unfavorable, but 52% of respondents still said they were unfamiliar with Kerry or had never heard of him.

Shapiro is seen as the leading vice presidential candidate as Harris campaigns in Philadelphia for the first time, but his combined approval and disapproval ratings are 25% to 23%. Still, 53% of Americans are unsure.

Meanwhile, Walz, the leading progressive candidate, is the least well-known of the three so far, with 71% of survey respondents saying they are unfamiliar with him or have never heard of him.

Meanwhile, Harris’s favorability rating has improved, from 40-44% in the last Marist poll to now being 46-48% favorable and unfavorable.

Republican candidate former President Donald Trump’s disapproval rating was mostly low at 53%, while 44% had a favorable view of the Republican candidate. Trump’s disapproval rating is up four points from the last Marist poll, conducted shortly after the Republican National Convention and the assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The survey of 1,613 adults was conducted Thursday through Sunday and has a margin of error of +/- 3.3 percentage points. Respondents were contacted in English and Spanish by mobile phone, landline or through an online survey panel.

Harris is scheduled to announce the selection at a rally in Philadelphia on Tuesday night.

Harris will be the first Democratic presidential candidate to visit Pennsylvania after securing the nomination on Monday. It will be her seventh visit to the state this year and her 17th since becoming vice president in 2021.

Kelly, Shapiro and Walz were the three finalists for the vice presidential running mate after an abbreviated vetting process after President Biden shocked the nation by dropping out of the 2024 presidential race and endorsing Harris as his successor.

Harris visited Washington DC over the weekend to meet in person with potential vice presidential candidates, a Democratic source confirmed to Fox News, including Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

Tim Waltz

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz speaks during a press conference following the shooting deaths of two police officers and a paramedic in Burnsville, Minnesota, on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2024. Walz emerged as a dark horse candidate but is now the leading progressive contender to be Harris’ running mate.

Ahead of her meetings with the candidates, Harris was briefed by a vetting team led by former Attorney General Eric Holder.

It’s unclear how the announcement will be made, but it’s likely to be via video introduction, similar to how Biden announced Harris as his running mate four years ago. But the Harris campaign’s plans could be upended on Monday or Tuesday if the announcement is leaked to the media.

After the Philadelphia rally, Harris and her running mate will team up for an ambitious and packed battleground state tour of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona and Nevada, seven battleground states that are likely to determine the outcome of the presidential election.

The vice president held his first large rally since succeeding Biden on the Democratic nomination list last week at the Georgia State Convention Center in Atlanta, drawing more than 10,000 people.

Harris will be accompanied on the tour by Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance, a source confirmed to Fox News. The Ohio senator will act as an attack dog for the Trump campaign, persuading voters in key battleground states to turn against Harris.
