Over the past decade, China has emerged as an economic superpower, threatening U.S. claims to global leadership. In an age of digital technology and artificial intelligence, China is leveraging these tools to expand its influence while the United States falls behind.

In the United States, regardless of ideology, many are wary and skeptical of AI, fearing that the technology may be dangerous and harmful to society, but some believe that the threat from China and the decline of America’s global leadership status are bigger dangers than any risk from AI, however great.

In “Zero Hour” James PoulosKara Frederick, director of technology policy at the Heritage Foundation, spoke about the technology challenges facing the United States.

Frederick argues that innovative technology is not inherently at odds with the American polity or way of life: “If we can design these products in line with our values, that becomes our strategic advantage,” she said.

As people around the world grow wary of privacy concerns brought on by modern technology, Frederick sees an opportunity for the US to take the lead.

“If the US and its allies solve the privacy issues and infuse these products with our values of transparency and openness, then Western countries can dictate the design of these products that the rest of the world wants to use,” Frederick argued.

Unfortunately, the US has not fully capitalized on this opportunity, allowing Communist China to have the upper hand. “We’ve ceded a lot of our power to China. … We haven’t been very proactive,” she said.
