Harris, Walz officially certified as Democratic nominees for president, vice president

Vice President Harris and newly announced running mate Tim Walz, the Governor of Minnesota, have been officially certified as the Democratic nominees for president and vice president, respectively, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) announced on Tuesday.

The certification, conducted by convention secretary Jason Ray, came less than a day after Harris formally won the Democratic presidential nomination in a virtual roll call vote and just hours after Walz announced he was joining the nomination.

“It is a great honor and privilege to congratulate Kamala Harris and Tim Walz on being the official Democratic nominees for president and vice president. The combination of Kamala and Waltz represents the future of the Democratic Party and our country,” Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison said in a statement.

After nearly a week of virtual voting, Harris received 99 percent of the delegate votes cast and was the only candidate whose name had been floated after President Biden dropped out of the race last month.

Harris quickly solidified her support among Democrats after Biden dropped out of the race, with a majority of delegates officially endorsing her by the end of the first day of campaigning.

The Democratic National Convention had initially planned to hold a virtual roll call ahead of the convention later this month to ensure the party’s candidate would appear on the ballot in all 50 states after Democrats were notified earlier this year that they had failed to certify the party’s presidential nominee within Ohio’s deadline before the Aug. 19 convention.

However, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine (R) signed a bill in June extending the deadline from Aug. 7 to Aug. 31.

The Democratic National Committee confirmed last month that it would hold a virtual vote to ensure a presidential nominee is decided by August 7th.

Since announcing her candidacy, Harris has seen her popularity rise in opinion polls, narrowing the gap between her and former President Trump and in some cases even holding a slight lead.

Harris and Walz made a campaign appearance together at a rally in Philadelphia on Tuesday night.

The Harris campaign said it has raised more than $20 million since announcing Waltz as Harris’ running mate.
