At a rally welcoming Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Tuesday, Democrats chanted “Put him in jail!” after Vice President-elect Kamala Harris attacked former President Donald Trump.
Karis repeated parts of a speech he gave at the Democratic Party’s campaign headquarters last month.
At that time she Said:
You know, before I was elected Vice President, before I was elected Senator, as I said in California, I was elected Attorney General, and before that, I was a trial attorney. In that role, I faced off against criminals of all kinds — predators who abuse women, con artists who defraud consumers, con artists who break the rules for their own personal gain. So hear me when I say that I know a guy like Donald Trump. And in this race, I’m proud, I’m proud to put my record up against him.
On Tuesday, she did it almost exactly the same way, and the crowd responded:
HARRIS: As many of you know, before I was elected Vice President or Senator, I was elected Attorney General, and before that I was elected District Attorney. [Applause] Prior to that, I was a court prosecutor. [Applause] So in those roles I was confronted with all kinds of perpetrators. [Applause] A predator who abuses women. [Boos] Scammers deceiving consumers. [Boos] A cheater who breaks the rules for his own gain. [Boos] So listen to what I have to say. [applause] — I know what type of person Donald Trump is.
Crowd: Lock him up! Lock him up!
Ms Harris struggled to regain control: She did not push back against the crowd, simply repeating, “Wait. Wait.”
Waltz then vaguely mentioned “crimes” that Trump had “committed,” and the crowd chanted “Put him in jail!”
Trump faces prosecution at both the state and federal levels, which critics say are partisan. In Manhattan, where he faces a fraud trial next month, Trump is accused of failing to report payments he made to Stormy Daniels under a non-disclosure agreement as a campaign expense. (Ironically, while he was California’s attorney general, the state’s Department of Justice paid Harris paid $1.1 million to settle sexual harassment charges, and her husband, Doug Emhoff, was recently exposed for having an affair with the family’s nanny, which contributed to the breakdown of his first marriage.
Many Trump supporters believe the weaponization of the judiciary is a key reason for supporting him for president.
During the 2016 election, many in the crowd at Trump campaign rallies chanted “Put her in lockup!”, a reference to Hillary Clinton’s remarkable ability to avoid criminal prosecution for misusing classified information and government emails.
But after taking office, Trump adopted a lenient stance and chose not to prosecute his opponents. Democrats under President Joe Biden have shown no such qualms, pursuing Trump and his supporters at every level.
