Black woman charged with hate crimes after reportedly calling white arresting officer ‘racist a** mother******,’ racial slur

A black woman in Louisiana has been charged with a hate crime after she allegedly called the white Baton Rouge police officer who arrested her over the weekend a “racist whore.” WVLA-TV reported.

Crystal Harris, 43, of Baton Rouge, was arrested Sunday and charged with unlawful use of the 911 emergency reporting system, resisting a police officer with violence, intimidation and retaliation against the public, false communication with intent to respond to an emergency and making a false statement during arrest, police said.

During the transfer, Harris “made multiple comments about the officers being white, which was the reason for his arrest,” the report said, citing the affidavit. The comments included calling the officers “racist idiots” and “union men.” [N-word] “It’s a boy,” WVLA reported.

A police dispatcher told responding officers that Harris “had called 911 multiple times, requesting police be dispatched and stating he would remain on the phone until they arrived on scene,” WVLA reported, citing the affidavit. The dispatcher also told officers that Harris “was very aggressive during the call,” the station reported. The call was recorded.

Officers responded to the scene in the 1100 block of Spanish Town Road around 6:30 a.m., according to WVLA.

The sheriff’s office discovered the same officer had previously taken Harris to the same location, where Harris was reportedly attempting to retrieve her belongings from her apartment. According to the affidavit, the officer had previously advised Harris to “call the patrolman’s office to schedule a time to retrieve her belongings if she was unable to do so today,” WVLA noted.

When officers encountered Harris on Sunday, they found her outside the apartment and told her they could not help anyone get into a locked room, the sheriff’s office said, adding that Harris had previously received instructions on how to properly handle the issue.

WVLA reported that Harris was arrested at the scene on suspicion of misuse of 911 and threatening a dispatcher, then placed in a police vehicle and transported to the First Precinct reception area.

During the transfer, Harris “made multiple comments about the officers being white, which was the reason for his arrest,” the report said, citing the affidavit. The comments included calling the officers “racist motherfuckers” and “union men.” [N-word] “The juvenile was arrested,” WVLA reported. Additionally, she said her arrest “was not a proper procedure,” the station noted.

Harris told the officer he wasn’t going to get out of the car and initially didn’t.

During the transfer, she reportedly taunted officers, telling them to “give me your hands,” and once she reached the reception area, she refused to be handcuffed and taken to a holding cell.

BRPD said officers had to escort Harris to jail after she reportedly repeatedly refused to be fingerprinted, according to the affidavit.

Harris was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Jail on Sunday, where she remains, according to jail records checked Wednesday morning.
