The earthquake occurred in the census-designated area of Lamont in Kern County, adjacent to Bakersfield.
Residents in the Central Valley, Southern California and the Central Coast also reported feeling the quake.
A potentially fatal rock slid into the southbound lanes of I-5 just south of Grapevine Road. Three lanes were closed until maintenance crews could remove the rock. No injuries have been reported.
The California Institute of Technology’s Seismological Laboratory claims that the quake was followed by at least 31 aftershocks, the largest of which reached a magnitude of 4.5.
Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) officials also announced the department had gone into “earthquake mode,” with all 106 nearby fire stations surveying the area by land, air and sea.
“No significant infrastructure damage or injuries were reported within the city of Los Angeles,” Los Angeles Fire Department officials said.
So far, there have been no reports of injuries as a result of the earthquake.
