Vance tries to confront Harris on Wisconsin tarmac

Republican Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio tried to criticize Vice President Kamala Harris for not answering reporters’ questions on Wednesday while the two planes were parked on the tarmac at a Wisconsin airport.

Vance, former President Trump’s running mate, also told reporters at Chippewa Valley Regional Airport that he was looking to get a closer look at Air Force Two because “it’s going to be my plane in a few months.”

The Republican senator told reporters he was concerned Harris’ press corps “might get a little lonely” because she isn’t answering reporters’ questions.

“Hey, guys. What’s up?” Vance asked as he walked toward the group. “I just wanted to check in on my flight and say hello to the vice president and ask him why Kamala Harris is refusing, why she’s refusing to answer questions from the media.”

“And I also thought that maybe her reporters might get a little lonely,” he added. “At least I have enough respect for you guys and the American people that you report to that I’m going to be there to talk to you guys and answer your questions. So I thought her reporters might actually benefit from that.”

Vance described the incident as “a bit of fun.”

“So I had a little fun. I don’t think the vice president waved to me as he drove off, but I’m glad I did it,” he continued. “And I’m glad I’m coming to Wisconsin and actually trying to convince people to vote, not just give a scripted speech.”

Vance mentioned the incident later that afternoon when he spoke with employees of the manufacturing company, Wollard International.

“It was a good day today,” Vance told the audience. “In fact, we just saw the vice president’s plane sitting on the runway. We landed at about the same time as her. The reason I went out there was because I thought it might be nice to check out this plane that could be mine in a few months if we all do our jobs well. And I think we will.”

“But actually, my biggest wish is to go and say hello to the reporters who are traveling with the vice president. I thought they must be feeling lonely because Kamala Harris isn’t taking any questions.”

Amar Moosa, emergency operations manager for the Harris campaign, later called Vance’s actions in the X post “bizarre.”

“Let’s be clear: J.D. Vance has been following VP Harris around the country,” Moussa wrote. “He approached her plane today simply because he wanted to talk. And now he’s begging for a debate?”

“Well, this is getting weird,” he added.
