Mexican journalists are once again condemning the death of one of their own journalists at the hands of an armed group, an attack that took place even though the victim was under police protection.
The murder took place on Sunday afternoon in the city of Celaya, Guanajuato state, where Alberto “El Llanero” (the Ranger) Martínez Nonguez was killed during a targeted attack. Processor report Martinez was riding in a police vehicle with two other officers when they were ambushed by a group of gunmen. Officers were able to fight off the attackers and take Martinez to a local hospital, where he died a short time later. Two officers were also injured and are in stable condition.
Martinez was a longtime crime journalist who was under 24-hour police protection after surviving an assassination attempt in 2022, when a group of gunmen attempted to kill him as he was leaving his home. After the incident, Martinez focused primarily on covering car accidents and minor crimes. Martinez was returning from a scene of a collision between a car and a pedestrian when the incident occurred. Processor report.

On Martinez’s Facebook page, his family announced the murder on his behalf and asked for prayers, saying: “Please pray for my eternal rest.”
Guanajuato state has seen a dramatic increase in violence in recent years as rival criminal gangs, including the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and remnants of the Santa Rosa de Lima fuel theft ring, engage in fierce turf wars.
Martinez’s killing comes as press freedom groups continue to label Mexico one of the most dangerous countries for reporters. The Mexican government denies allegations of violence against journalists and insists impunity has ended under the current administration.
