What is sport climbing?

There are actually three types of sport climbing at the Olympics, all of which you’ll get to see over the next three days. The first is speed climbing, which is exactly what it sounds like: climbers must complete the course in the fastest time possible.

At the Olympics, the last two disciplines of sport climbing will be combined into one event, with climbers competing in both disciplines and their combined scores determining the medal winners. These disciplines are lead climbing and bouldering.

In lead climbing, athletes attempt to climb as high as possible up a 15-metre or higher wall within six minutes without checking the route beforehand, using anchors on the wall to avoid falls. In bouldering, athletes attempt to climb a 4.5-metre high wall in as few attempts as possible within a time limit, without the use of ropes.
