The Seahawks’ practice on Wednesday felt like the punchline of a Rodney Dangerfield joke as a fight broke out on what should have been a normal day at training camp.
Several physical incidents occurred during practice, including receiver DK Metcalf swinging his helmet around and hitting one of his teammates, all of which were broadcast live by NFL Network near the field in Renton, Washington.
As the network panel began speaking, a scuffle could be seen happening behind them, with Metcalf at one point snatching cornerback Tre Brown’s helmet and trying to hit him with it, only to grab safety K’Von Wallace instead. The Athletic reported.
More players joined the brawl, but it was contained before things got any worse.
The situation was so serious that Seahawks head coach Mike McDonald stopped practice to talk to his players. According to Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times:.
McDonald told NFL Network that part of the blame was on the fact that his players were “tired” from playing against each other so many times.
“We’re in a real bind right now,” he said. “I think the guys understand that. Let’s look out for each other. The last thing we want to do here is fight, especially between teammates. DK sent us a great message at the end of practice, just putting everything in perspective. The guys finished the game the right way, so I’m proud of our guys.”
Earlier, Brown got into a shoving scuffle with receiver Jake Bobo, causing Bobo to lose his helmet and be punched in the face by a defensive back.
In another incident, linebacker Tyrell Dodson and tight end Pharaoh Brown began shoving each other.
Brown was apparently infuriated by Dodson’s punch to running back Kenneth Walker III after that play and the subsequent incident with Metcalf.
Two more incidents between players led to linebacker Derrick Hall and offensive lineman Christian Haynes being removed from the remainder of practice.
Seattle plays its preseason opener against the Chargers on Saturday.
