Democratic state senator switches parties to Republican in deep blue state

In California, a far-left state, a Democratic state senator is switching parties to become Republican.

Sen. Marie Alvarado Gil flipped her 4th Senatorial District seat from red to blue, according to Politico. ReportShe is changing parties.

“I’m not going to follow racial trends. I’m looking at society as a whole.”

Alvarado Gil is known as a moderate Democrat who has challenged Democrats on a number of issues, including a bill on retail theft, which has become a growing concern in California.

She also represents a Republican-leaning district that will be difficult to defend as she is up for reelection in 2026. About 39% of the district’s residents are registered as Republicans, while only 34% are registered as Democrats. According to To state records.

Politico cited two sources with direct knowledge of the decision but said Alvarado Gil’s office had not confirmed the reports.

The 4th State Senate District includes Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado, Inyo, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, Mono, Nevada, Placer, Stanislaus and Tuolumne counties. The district has approximately 1 million residents.

in comment She told the Sacramento Bee that she resents Democrats for pressuring her to blindly follow and support their orders.

“People ask me, ‘How can you side with the district attorney?’ This is going to put more black and brown people in prison. I’m not interested in race, I’m looking at society as a whole. I also understand that if we don’t hold people accountable, it creates a domino effect,” she said.

“It’s not just about our prison system, but our education system, our economic system, our housing system and whether Californians see themselves as part of their communities or whether they’re going to pack up and leave,” she added.

Alvarado Gil’s defection to the Republican Party is unlikely to change the blue state’s laws, as Democrats have firm control of the Legislature.
