Breaking down the Top 5 quarterbacks in the 2025 recruiting class

The 2025 quarterback recruiting class is beginning to wrap up, with several of the top 50 players at the position committing to the program after taking their official visits. According to On3 Sports.

With the fall football season just around the corner, let’s break down the top five quarterbacks in the 2025 class and evaluate each candidate ahead of their senior season.

Bryce Underwood | Belleville, Michigan

Underwood, the No. 1 quarterback in the 2025 class, was recruited by a five-star recruit in January. LSU Tigers.

Underwood named Louisiana State University, the University of Alabama, the University of Michigan, the University of Colorado and Penn State in his top seven list in November. Floridaand Oregon was a finalist.

Ultimately, the Michigan native chose the Tigers after several unofficial visits, giving Baton Rouge one of the best quarterback recruits in recent years, according to the rankings.

At 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, Underwood is the perfect player with the size, arm talent, athleticism and instincts needed to be a top-tier player at the quarterback position, and that was on display during his 2023 season, when he passed for 3,329 yards and 44 touchdowns with just three interceptions and seven rushing touchdowns.

Underwood has another advantage: He’s one of the youngest players in this class and may need a year to get up to speed at the next level. Still, he’s projected to be a quality, multi-year starter at LSU and has high potential and could be a first-round draft pick if he plays to his potential.

The Michigan product has a great touch for passing in tight spaces and in the mid-range and deep range, and he continues to improve his mechanics, allowing him to throw the ball to all areas of the field effectively.

More importantly, Underwood already appears to have game feel, as he feels good under pressure in the pocket and has a good understanding of defenses when reading the field, which adds to his on-field ability.

Ultimately, Underwood’s talent is among the best in his entire class, and his combination of size, athleticism and arm talent makes him an elite dual-threat quarterback candidate.

Tavian St. Clair | Bellefontaine, Ohio

Five-star Tavian St. Clair is one of the biggest quarterback prospects in the 2025 class. Ohio State University During his official visit in June, he chose the Buckeyes from an offer list that included Michigan, Alabama, Penn State and Tennessee.

St. Clair stands at 6-foot-4 and weighs 225 pounds, but also has good mobility and speed that would make him one of the better two-way players in this class.

St. Clair has come a long way as a quarterback over the past few seasons, demonstrating his obvious arm strength and improved accuracy as he completed 70 percent of his passes for 3,938 yards, 37 touchdowns and eight interceptions as a junior.

St. Clair’s deep ball is one of his biggest selling points and he could be one of the best in his class heading into the fall, and he showed off some excellent mechanics in the Elite 11 earlier this offseason.

St. Clair, a native of Ohio, will remain at Ohio State and will join a highly talented quarterback roster next year that includes Air Noland, Julian Thayne, Devin Brown and Lincoln Kienholz.

There will likely be some movement, but this team still boasts one of the most talented groups of young players in the country.

Julian “Ju-Ju” Lewis | Carrollton, Georgia

Julian Lewis, one of the most talked about prospects in the recruiting battle this offseason, continues to be one of the top quarterbacks in the 2025 class heading into the fall.

Lewis, who plans to attend USC, has made numerous official and unofficial visits over the past year, most recently to Colorado, Auburn, Indiana and USC in June.

One of the younger quarterbacks in the reclassified class of 2026, Lewis boasts supreme accuracy and ball placement, and his production at Carrollton High School has been nothing short of elite.

Lewis has thrown for 7,512 yards and 96 touchdowns over the past two years, and his game continues to grow as he shows off his accuracy, touch and intangible talents.

In the pocket, Lewis has good feel and can make plays on the run, but he can also find ways to escape and keep the ball out of danger.

Size and arm strength may be the biggest weaknesses for the 6-foot-1, 185-pound quarterback, but the overall arm talent is certainly there.

Of course, if Lewis stays at USC, he’ll be working with Lincoln Riley, who has plenty of experience coaching players similar to Lewis, which could boost his overall rating.

Hughes Longstreet | Centennial, Corona, California

California’s top quarterback, five-star Hussan Longstreet Texas A&M He chose the Aggies as his next destination, even though they weren’t on his list of top eight schools as of November.

Still, Longstreet’s relationship with new head coach Mike Elko and his staff grew, leading to a Junior Day visit in February and a commitment in April before his official visit this summer.

As a junior, Longstreet completed 66.8 percent of his passes for 3,013 yards, 24 touchdowns and six interceptions, but also showed dual-threat ability by rushing for 645 yards and seven scores.

Standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 200 pounds, Longstreet has outstanding arm strength and can throw the ball to all areas of the field, including being adept at throwing the ball on the run.

That strength means Longstreet will need to hone his touch at the next level — speed can’t be taught — but he has shown a good feel for utilizing his dual-threat skills when needed.

He should fit very well into a zone-read system and could be used in a very similar manner to how Riley Leonard was used at Duke under Coach Elko when he finally takes the field at Texas A&M.

Kieron Russell | Duncanville, Texas

One of the most improved players this offseason, five-star Kieron Russell is one of the best athletes in the 2024 class and will be attending the University of Alabama.

A native of Duncanville, Texas, Russell initially committed to his hometown team, the SMU Mustangs, but withdrew from that program after his official visit in June, opting to attend the University of Alabama.

Russell plays for one of the best teams in the state of Texas and has proven he’s a real talent at the quarterback position, with playmaking talent using both his arm and his legs.

Russell has good timing and is currently a reliable first-read pitcher, but he needs to improve his decision-making skills from his first read.

He’ll be working with a strong staff under head coach Cullen DeBoer at Alabama, and at 6-foot-3, 175 pounds, he has plenty of room to grow and could be one of the most intriguing quarterbacks this entire season in terms of potential.

His rushing ability is especially prominent despite his size, making him an exciting player to watch, and he’s clearly starting to develop, having been named MVP of the Elite 11 this offseason, showcasing his arm talent.

If he can put it all together by performing well again this season, he could continue to climb the rankings as a potential unanimous top-three quarterback in his class heading into college.
