The Italian American Civil Rights League (IACRL) has slammed Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D), who was recently announced as Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate, over his response to rioters who toppled a statue of Christopher Columbus, calling Walz an “enemy of the Italian American community” and calling on him to withdraw from the 2024 election.
“Tim Walz is an enemy of the Italian American community. He has long supported erasing our culture. He has strongly supported the removal of Christopher Columbus statues,” IACRL board member Mike Crispi said in a Thursday X post.
Breaking News: Tim Walz is an enemy of the Italian-American community.
He has long been in favor of erasing our culture. He was a strong supporter of removing statues of Christopher Columbus.

“We’re going to call this racism,” Crispi added. “@TheIACRL is calling for him to leave.”
In his post, Crispi quoted the IACRL statement, saying Governor Walz “allowed a violent mob of left-wing criminals to destroy the state statue of Christopher Columbus.”

The statement declared that under Walz’s leadership, “two people have been killed, a police station has been burned, and hundreds of millions of dollars of damage has been caused.”

“Tim Walz did nothing to stop radical vandals from targeting the most prominent symbol of Italian American culture in a blatant hate crime,” Crispi said. “He knew they were coming, but he did nothing to protect the statue.”
“His record as Minnesota’s governor is the most disgraceful of any governor in the last decade,” Crispi added. “By allowing mobs to loot and rob, then standing back when they targeted Columbus statues, Walz has made the North Star State the poster child for Cultural Marxism run amok.”
In 2020, protesters in St. Paul, Minnesota, toppled a statue of 15th-century explorer Christopher Columbus outside the state capitol, tying a rope around it and pulling it off its pedestal.

The IACRL director also criticized Governor Walz for keeping the Columbus statue down “to appease Native American activists and anti-Italian American sympathizers.”
As Breitbart News reported, the origins of Columbus Day stem from efforts to combat racism against Italian immigrants, who endured everything from racist slurs to lynch mobs when they first arrived in America.
Today, in the age of cancel culture and wokeness, Italian Americans are facing a new type of mob seeking to ban a federal holiday that celebrates Italian heritage.
