Woman’s body recovered from Grand Canyon for third death at national park in a week

The National Park Service (NPS) announced that the body of a 20-year-old woman has been found in Grand Canyon National Park, marking the third death in a week.

According to press release Leticia A. Castillo, 20, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, first went missing after entering the park on Aug. 3, according to the National Park Service.

Authorities discovered her body Tuesday, 150 feet below the canyon’s Twin Overlooks, after a days-long search.

Photos from the scene showed Castillo’s body being removed by helicopter, where it was transported to the Coconino County Coroner’s Office, authorities said.

Castillo’s cousin Post to Facebook Remembering the 20-year-old who “brightened up any room.”

“Letty, words cannot express how much I will miss you,” Alexis Hernandez wrote on Facebook. “I love you so much Prima and will always cherish every moment I spent with you. You brighten up any room when you walk in.”

Castillo’s death is the third this week in the popular tourist destination and the 11th so far this year.

On July 31, Abel Joseph Mejia, 20, from North Carolina, was on a church mission trip when he fell off the edge of the South Rim and fell 400 feet to his death.
