As Breitbart News points out, Waltz served as a master sergeant for a short time, but was discharged as a master sergeant because he did not meet the requirements for that rank.

Many media outlets and advocates continued to report that Waltz was a retired Army sergeant major. Oddly enough, the Veterans Common Sense Association Referenced Waltz was listed as “Command Sergeant (Ret.) Waltz.” journal The article directly quoted Waltz in a quote block that explicitly referred to him as a “retired sergeant major.”
