Three things to watch in New York Jets preseason opener

Here’s what to watch out for when the Jets open the preseason game against the Commanders on Saturday.

1. While we won’t see any starters on the Jets’ offensive line, the Jets know they will need reserve players to compete this season.

I always do that.

This game will show just how deep the Jets’ line is.

It starts with first-round draft pick Olu Fashanu and how he performs in his first game.

But Carter Warren and Max Mitchell also have something to prove here.

2. Will McDonald has a great opportunity this season to show he deserves more playing time.

The 2023 first-round draft pick should get significant playing time in this game.

He needs to get closer to the quarterback.

With Haason Reddick still sidelined, McDonald has been practicing more than he has in camp.

He needs to show his coaches he’s ready to play a big role this season.

3. Xavier Gipson and Jason Brownlee were two surprises last summer.

Both undrafted free agents were selected by the team and received significant playing time last year.

Now they are not the weak.

The Jets have a deep wide receiver corps and the two will have to compete for roles.
