Former NFL quarterback Alex Smith shows the gruesome damage to his leg nearly 6 years after suffering compound fracture

Former NFL quarterback Alex Smith showed off his previously broken leg, showing just how much the gruesome injury has affected his body.

Smith played 16 years in the league with San Francisco, Kansas City and Washington. While playing for the Capitals in 2018, Smith suffered a serious leg injury that caused him to miss the rest of the year and the entirety of 2019.

“I was so pleased because I could see the blood spurting out.”

At the time, football insider Adam Schefter said detail Smith’s injuries are as follows:

“Alex Smith suffered a compound fracture, meaning the bone broke through the skin,” Schefter wrote. “Trauma surgeons discovered that Smith suffered a spiral fracture in his leg, a condition in which a long bone breaks due to rotational force. Smith, 34, will face a lengthy rehabilitation process before returning.”

In fact, Smith’s injuries were so severe that he had to have his leg amputated.

“It was a good game because you could see the blood spurting out. We were lucky it happened right before halftime. I’d never seen blood spurting out like that before,” Smith said in 2020. Jump into sports.

Smith returned for the 2020 season, his final season in the league, and won the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award.

The reconstructive surgery began with a skin graft from another part of the body, which was passed through a machine called a mesher, which stretched the pieces together.
