Mainstream media organizations began reporting gingerly this week about how Vice President Kamala Harris has given very few unscripted interviews since becoming her party’s de facto nominee.
The lack of coverage has highlighted the media’s failure to secure an interview with Harris, who typically rushes to interview candidates who have just been nominated for president, but Kamala Harris appears to be an exception.
The media Interviewed Harris has not appeared on television since June 24, 2024. Her last television appearance was reportedly in Asked Harris’ last solo press conference was eight months ago, on December 2, 2023. Reports These past few days Recount Harris had very few unscripted interviews and none of the headlines criticizing her for not doing prime-time interviews after receiving the nomination.
“The Harris campaign is hoping to ride this wave for as long as possible,” Politico’s The West Wing Playbook said. explanation“So there’s little concern that the candidate will avoid another thing that’s long been required of presidential candidates: answering questions from the press,” he said, appearing to defend Harris’ lack of media access.
Harris promised Thursday that she would schedule just one interview in August, but it was unclear whether the interview would take place in the last three weeks of August or be scheduled before the end of the month.

“It’s dangerous to be asked difficult questions.” Claimed of Hills Amy Parnes: “Since becoming the Democratic front-runner after Biden dropped out of the race, Harris has closed the gap on Trump in the polls and even led in some surveys.”
“Where does it say that you have to sit down and speak at a press conference?” asked “They had to pick a vice president, plan a convention, move around, do all that stuff, and she’s already agreed to the debates,” said Democratic political commentator James Carville.
The most notable aspect of the media’s seeming lack of enthusiasm for the Harris interview is that it comes at the expense of monetizing associated content. Elite media organizations are struggling financially in the new age of digital media. They rely on newsworthy stories generated by relevant people and events to publish content for monetization.
Without sufficient revenue, media organizations will disappear quickly. Have, other Struggle Layoffs seem to be the rule of thumb in the industry: This week, Axios, a “far-left propaganda site” according to Breitbart News’ John Nolte, announced it was cutting 10 percent of its 500-person staff during the busy presidential election season.
Journalism Industry Employed A quarter-century ago, half a million people were unemployed. “It’s now widely accepted that more than two-thirds of newspaper journalism jobs have disappeared since 2005, and that this trend will continue for decades to come,” Politico reporter Jack Schaefer lamented in May.
With the media retreating, Ms. Harris is content to avoid it as much as possible, a longtime ally of hers told The West Wing, suggesting she could continue this underground strategy until at least Labor Day.
Harris appears to have at least two reasons for avoiding unscripted interviews whenever possible. First, she has a penchant for gibberish. Harris is notorious for coming up with a string of bizarre phrases and explanations for simple ideas. In 2022, for example, she marveled at Venn diagrams. “Another alphabet soup from Kamala,” one X user said. RidiculedAt another time, Harris spoke at length about “the importance of the passage of time.”
Second, Harris appears to be navigating policy debates within her own party. Anonymous campaigners have reportedly reversed themselves on five of Harris’ far-left policies, including fracking, a key issue of great importance to Pennsylvania voters. “What can you do? Don’t be bound by the past,” Harris likes to say.
