An immigrant has been released from a jail in the sanctuary city of Chicago, Illinois, after allegedly robbing an 80-year-old woman, according to a new report.
According to CWB ChicagoOn August 2, Elio Redondo Lagasse, a 47-year-old immigrant from Venezuela, was arrested and charged with robbing an elderly woman in Chicago’s Bridgeport neighborhood.
Police allege Lagasse was on his bicycle in the early morning hours looking for a woman just a block from her home. The woman told police Lagasse ran up to her, snatched her purse, stole her hat from her head and rode off on his bicycle.
Two good Samaritans, ages 42 and 43, witnessed the robbery and pursued Lagasse. The two men eventually caught up with Lagasse and held him down until police arrived. Lagasse was arrested and subsequently charged.
But prosecutors have not sought to detain Lagasse, and thanks to Chicago’s sanctuary city policy, officers are unlikely to turn him over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Judge Caroline Glennon Goodman released Lagasse from prison despite him failing to appear at his trial last October.
In that case, Lagasse was accused of breaking into an elderly man’s home and stealing beer and food from his refrigerator. He did not appear in court and prosecutors dropped the case against him.
