“Catfish” host and co-creator Nev Schulman is grateful to be alive after a tragic accident left him nearly paralyzed.

Schulman explained on social media that he had enjoyed a fun day fishing with his family last Sunday and was planning to pick up his son from school the next day.

“Monday was not that day. Monday was the day I learned what ‘pre-accident’ really means. And Monday made me realize how lucky I was to have Sunday in the first place. As the saying goes, life can change in an instant,” he wrote.

Sharing photos and videos from the aftermath of the accident, the 39-year-old explained, “I wasn’t able to cycle to pick up my son from school. In fact, in a way, it’s good that I didn’t. I was alone when it hit. Me and the truck. And I think I ended up on the sidewalk. I was alone and unconscious. Then I regained consciousness. Maybe I’d be OK (I wasn’t). I might still be able to do my long run on Thursday (I couldn’t).”

“I broke my neck. C5 and C6 to be exact. It’s a stable fracture. I’m not paralyzed. I lost the use of my hands for a while, but the human body is incredible. So are humans. The incredible knowledge and care from all the medical professionals was just amazing,” he wrote, thanking the staff at the emergency room in Southampton, New York, and the Stony Brook ICU.
