Bass was accompanied on stage by gymnast Simone Biles, who was wearing a walking boot after suffering a calf injury earlier in the Olympics, to hear her sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” in front of the Stade de France crowd.
Actor Tom Cruise then descended from the stadium’s beams onto the grounds and received a big kiss from a woman there, before collecting the Olympic flag and setting off on his movie-themed motorbike from Paris to Los Angeles.
The television special showed Cruise hurtling through the streets of Paris on the back of a cargo plane, before he made his way to the Hollywood sign emblazoned with the Olympic rings, and professional mountain biker Kate Courtney walked down the steps of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to hand the flag to former US sprinter Michael Johnson.
