US track and field star Noah Lyles attracted media attention when he refused to call the NBA champions “world champions” in his 2023 comments. What World ChampionWhile comments made by Lyles about “NBA stars” during the 2024 Paris Olympics have taken on new life, other comments made by Lyles about NBA stars have also taken on new life, with Lyles clarifying his comments on Monday.
Interview with the US men’s basketball team after winning the gold medal in Paris He wrote in Time magazine He appeared again. Minnesota Timberwolves Lyles questioned why Adidas doesn’t give the same respect to superstar guard Anthony Edwards as they unveiled a new shoe for Edwards.
When Lyles was negotiating a contract extension with Adidas last year, Lyles says the company gave him a sweet treat. Adidas invited him to a shoe launch for Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards, who has plenty of talent but, unlike Lyles, is not a six-time world champion. “What do you want to do?” Lyles says. “You want to invite me? [an event for] “A guy who’s never been to the NBA Finals? A sport you don’t care about? And you give him shoes? No disrespect. He’s a great athlete. He’s having a great year. I love that you knew he was going to be something big and had the insight to give him the shoes. My question is, ‘Why don’t you understand me?'” (Adidas declined to comment. Lyles signed a new contract with the company in February that is reportedly the most lucrative track and field contract since the Bolt era.)
Lyles denied the reports on social media, saying he did not attend Edwards’ shoe event because he had a prior commitment.
Lyles felt a lot of pressure after his “world champion of what” comment, and he largely backed it up: He won gold in the 100 meters, making him the fastest man on the planet, but only managed a bronze in the 200. (Lyles tested positive for COVID-19 before the race.) But you could argue that this same comment helped rally the U.S. men’s basketball team together in the first place.
The feud between Lyles and the NBA isn’t likely to die down anytime soon.
