According to a CNN report sponsored by a climate change nonprofit, many cities around the world will soon be too hot to host the Summer Olympics.
By 2050, summer temperatures in the eastern U.S. and cities around the world will exceed safe limits and become unsuitable for hosting the Olympics, the report said. Other cities that have already hosted the Olympics will likely not be able to do so again unless they can offset rising temperatures and hold the games in cooler months, the report continued.
“We can no longer afford to waste time on approaches that don’t work.”
The heat stress threshold was measured using a combination of heat, humidity, wind speed, sun angle and cloud cover, and taking these factors into account, the report said, making 82.1 degrees the safe limit for hosting sporting events.
This makes states around the Gulf Coast, including Florida, Texas and Georgia, ineligible. CNN also noted that Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and many Southeast Asian countries were deemed unable to host the Summer Olympics in what would normally be a month.
CNN Using the analysis of Carbon Planis a non-profit organization that tasks itself with “tackling the climate crisis.”
“In addition to achieving deep, rapid emissions reductions, we also need gigatonne-scale carbon removal and sound strategies for adapting to climate change. Our solutions must respect the science and support just outcomes – we can no longer afford to waste time on approaches that don’t work,” the organization said.
But the most recent example of heat standards being exceeded at a Summer Olympics was the Tokyo Games in 2021. Despite the average temperature exceeding 89 degrees, making it the hottest Summer Olympics on record, CNN noted that zero athletes were hospitalized.
Although one in 100 athletes reported heat stroke, no one was hospitalized, and the report attributes this disappointing result to Japan’s thorough preparation and measures to prevent heat stroke.
Sports have been played in temperatures exceeding 82 degrees for decades, and the NFL, for example, has seen a number of record-breaking events over the years that have called into question the supposed limits of heat stress.
The most exciting Super Bowl on record was held in 1973. 84 degrees.
in 1991The New England Patriots played against the Arizona Cardinals in 94 degree weather.
in 2003The Green Bay Packers traveled to Arizona to play in 102 degree heat.
During a 2007 game between the Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins, temperatures reached a record 120 degrees at Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Florida. The hottest NFL games of all time I played.
In 2018, the Patriots and Jacksonville Jaguars played in 97-degree sunshine. Fox Weather In 2022, it was reported that the Miami Dolphins are regularly playing in temperatures near 90 degrees during their home games.
That’s not to say other sports aren’t taking steps to combat the heat. The Texas Rangers of MLB have moved most of their home games to nighttime hours due to the heat in Arlington, Texas. Retractable roof That’s because temperatures will routinely reach 100 degrees by game time.
With that 82 degree threshold having been routinely exceeded across a variety of sports over the past 50 years, it appears that the so-called experts are wrong once again.
