Democratic Rep. Stinney Hoyer of Maryland suffered a stroke over the weekend but is recovering, his office announced Tuesday.
Margaret Mulkerin, Mr Hoyer’s deputy chief of staff and spokeswoman, said he suffered a “mild ischemic stroke” and was being treated.
“Mr. Hoyer is responding well to treatment with no residual symptoms and is expected to return to his normal schedule next week,” Marcheline said in a statement. “Mr. Hoyer’s wife and family are extremely grateful to his medical team.”

The underlying cause of the stroke has not been determined.
Hoyer, 85, has served in Congress since 1981 and announced his intention to seek reelection in January.
“I believe there is still work to be accomplished for my district, my state and my country,” he said in a statement at the time. “I am blessed with the health, strength and indomitable passion necessary to continue to serve the constituents in this district.” A defining moment for Maryland And America.”

Hoyer will retire as House Majority Leader in 2022 and will be replaced by Democratic Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, who served as top deputy speaker under former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
