Omar breaks ‘Squad’ losing streak with primary victory

Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar won Tuesday’s Democratic primary for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, helping her avoid the recent fate of other “Squad” members in Congress.

The race sees another member of the so-called “Squad” facing off against a primary challenger — Don Samuels, Abena McKenzie and Nate Schluter — seeking to make Omar the third member of the progressive group to lose a primary this election cycle.

The race was a rematch between Omar and Samuels, but the incumbent narrowly lost to Samuels in the 2022 primary, defeating her by just under 2 percentage points and handily winning reelection in November.

The Democratic primary for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, which the Cook Political Report rates as “solidly Democratic,” came amid a string of primary defeats for Omar’s fellow Squad members, including Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.), who lost in June’s primary, and Rep. Cori Bush (D-Missouri), who also lost in her own primary earlier this month.

This time, Omar’s campaign felt more confident because the sitting president was not facing a fierce advertising offensive from the United Democracy Project, a super PAC affiliated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).

Minnesota’s 5th District, which covers most of the Minneapolis metropolitan area, has been represented in the House of Representatives by Democrats since 1963, and Omar took office in 2019.

The district has also been a reliable Democratic voting center in presidential elections, with Democratic candidates winning by landslide in every election since 2000.
