CHICAGO — Anthony Rizzo had a follow-up scan on his arm this week that came back positive, but not good enough to move on to the next step in his recovery.
The veteran first baseman has some arm recovery since breaking it in mid-June, but “it still has a ways to go,” manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Boone said Rizzo has made progress in his recovery in recent weeks and will be able to continue baseball activities, including taking a live at-bat against Clark Schmidt at Yankee Stadium last week.
But it didn’t look like a rehabilitation mission was going to start anytime soon.
“He’s feeling pretty good and feeling good about everything he’s doing,” Boone said before the Yankees’ 4-1 win over the White Sox, “but we need to get him fully recovered so that if he has another fall, it’s not a risk.”
Will Warren is expected to be called up to start Wednesday’s series finale against the White Sox.
After being rained out on Friday and left open by starts by Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon in Saturday’s doubleheader, Warren was ineligible to be recalled on Wednesday unless to replace an injured player because he hadn’t returned to Triple-A in 15 days since he was last optioned.
That’s expected with Jazz Chisholm Jr. on the disabled list, but the Yankees still need to release pitchers to get to the maximum of 13 pitchers on the 26-man active roster.
Warren has made two spot starts over the past two weeks and did well against the Phillies before getting beaten by the Angels last week.
Alex Rodriguez joins CC Sabathia at the top of the list of first-timers for this year’s Old-Timers Day, which will be held at Yankee Stadium on August 24.
But in lieu of a game, the Yankees will once again host a Q&A session (moderated by Susin Waldman and Joe Girardi) honoring their 2009 World Series-winning team, including Derek Jeter.
One notable exception on the attendance list the Yankees released Tuesday was Brett Gardner, whose whereabouts have been unknown since playing his final game as a Yankee in the 2021 American League Wild Card Game at Fenway Park.
