NYPD nabs suspect for killing of sports YouTuber

The New York City Police Department announced this week that a gunman has been arrested after allegedly shooting and killing a sports YouTuber in Harlem last month before targeting another person.

Mohammed Sawaneh, 21, was arrested Tuesday morning on a murder charge stemming from the drive-by shooting death of 37-year-old Jeremy Cummings in July.

“I didn’t do anything,” he said, hours after his arrest, as he was led away from the 28th Precinct wearing a bright red hoodie and sweatpants. amNewYork reported.

Cummings was shot in the back and abdomen and was rushed to Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

He ran a YouTube channel called “JermSportsTV,” which had more than 35,000 subscribers and posted short, edited clips from sporting events and the football video game “Madden.”

NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenney said shortly after the shooting that Cummings appeared to have been an unintended target.

“He has no criminal history and no gang affiliations. Prior to the incident the victim was simply standing on a street corner with a group of friends – around four or five men,” Kenney said.

Police said after the shooting, the gunman was surrounded by a van while fleeing and abandoned the vehicle.

Police say he fled on a Citi Bike that he had stolen from two teenagers on the sidewalk.

Sawaneh has no criminal record and a motive is still under investigation, police said.

In addition to one count of second-degree murder, he was also charged with first-degree robbery, fleeing the scene of an incident without reporting it and two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm.
