A new survey has found that Washington DC is the least livable city in the US for the second year in a row, with 33% of respondents ranking it in the top five worst cities in the US.

Clever, which conducted the poll, surveyed 1,000 people in June and then looked at the latest US Census migration data to try to understand why the nation’s capital has become the least liveable city in America.

This year, 33% of Americans said the District of Columbia is one of the top five worst cities to live in, up from 2023, when 20% of Americans held the same opinion.

Clever said Politics aside, Washington DC is one of the most expensive cities in the country, with 65% of Americans saying it’s a place they wouldn’t want to live due to the rising cost of living.

Housing costs are also a big factor in the cost of living: According to Zillow, the median price of a home in the Capital Region is $638,000, based on data obtained through July 31, 2024.

Another factor hurting the city’s reputation is crime, with 274 murders recorded in DC in 2023, the highest number in more than two decades.

As Washington DC struggles to meet people’s demand for housing, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco also made the list of the top 10 least desirable US cities.

A recent study found that Los Angeles is one of the most expensive cities in the country, making it a less desirable place to live.

Housing costs in Los Angeles have become so prohibitively expensive that the annual income needed to buy a home exceeds what residents actually earn, Clever reported.

Cities like Baltimore and Detroit may have affordable living costs, but their poor security keeps them on the list of least livable cities.

According to the study, Detroit leads the nation in rape, murder and aggravated assault, while Baltimore leads the nation in murders and robberies per 100,000 people.

Meanwhile, Tampa, Florida, was ranked the most livable city in America, citing year-round warm weather, low crime rates and affordable housing prices.

Coming in second was Charlotte, North Carolina, and coming in third was Virginia Beach, Virginia.
