A 22-year-old journalist just starting out in his career was killed when he was hit by an oncoming train in Chicago.

On July 25, the day the incident occurred, Grace Bentkowski, 22, was commuting to work in her home in Dyer, Indiana.

The recent college graduate had arrived at Hegewisch station and started to cross the tracks when a train came hurtling towards her at high speed and struck her.

Family members told local media that a large pillar was blocking the road and Bentkowski noticed other people crossing and followed them.

“My first thought was ‘no way’. I thought if I got hit by a train leaving the station, it wasn’t going that fast and in the worst case scenario I’d break my leg. It’s my worst nightmare,” her father said.

The grieving father is now campaigning to raise awareness, calling the lack of supervision a “safety issue”.

“This is a safety issue. It’s 2024. I don’t know why there aren’t safety signs that say ‘Stop, look, listen’. It doesn’t make sense,” he told local media. “She was thrown 50 feet.”

According to Bentkowski’s LinkedIn profile, she graduated from Ball State University in May and recently began working as an associate creative producer at NewsNation.

On GoFundMe, the 22-year-old is remembered as a “hardworking journalist and one of the hardest workers.”

“Grace touched so many lives at the young age of 22. She was a hardworking journalist and one of the hardest working people you’ll ever meet. I wish we could have been together longer because she was able to make such a big impact at 22,” her brother, Adian Bentkowski, wrote. “We have lost such a beautiful and caring soul, but she is with us all now.”

Bentkowski set off from his home in Dyer on the South Shore Line.

“The South Shore Line is a commuter rail service operated by the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation Authority (NICTD) that runs from Millennium Station in downtown Chicago to South Bend International Airport in South Bend, Indiana,” the South Shore Line website states. say.

The traffic department said the incident is currently under investigation.
