(NewsNation) — Civil rights activists fear a tsunami of identity theft could be on the way after a group of hackers claim to have stolen nearly 3 billion personal details, including Social Security numbers. The theft occurred in April, according to a class-action lawsuit filed in federal court in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The group, known as the Department of Defense, allegedly stole the information from National Public Data, a website that provides personally identifiable information.
