New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu (Republican) said in comments on Thursday that former President Trump can defeat Vice President Harris in the next presidential election if he stays “professional and focused.”
“Cost of living is going to be a very real issue in this campaign come September and October. As long as the former president stays focused on that and stays professional on the campaign trail and talks about what the American people want to talk about, it’s going to be a very real issue for the American people,” Sununu said. Fox News host Neil Cavuto said this on his show. “Neil Cavuto and Your World.”
“As soon as he strays from the point, he gives Democrats a hand in winning an election that he should win in a landslide, and he really should,” Sununu continued.
Trump blasted his 2024 presidential rival as his political popularity has risen in the last month, with his supporters pressuring him to stick to his policies rather than attacking his opponent.
“At the end of the day, if the president can focus on these issues in his final 60 days, he can win,” Sununu said, citing inflation, the cost of living and credit card debt as reasons.
“He should win in a big way, and if he stays professional, stays focused on the campaign, stays focused not just on his base but on the undecided voters, which is key, he’ll be able to bring back that enthusiasm he had a month and a half ago,” the governor added.
Former Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway said earlier this week that a winning strategy for Trump is to “cut down on the insults.”
“President Trump’s winning formula is very clear,” Conway told Fox Business host Larry Kudlow on Monday. “Few insults, many insights and policy contrasts.”
Harris has been gaining ground in recent polls, leading Trump by 1.8 points in The Hill/Decision Desk average of national polls.
A recent poll by The New York Times and Siena College showed Harris leading Trump by four points in three key battleground states: Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.
The Hill has reached out to the Trump campaign.
