Yankees call up Tim Mayza to fortify bullpen in surprise move

DETROIT — The Yankees are adding a second left-handed pitcher to their bullpen.

The team recalled relief pitcher Tim Maza on Friday before the series opener against the Tigers at Comerica Park.

He would be another option along with Tim Hill to replace Aaron Boone on the left side as the Yankees look to bolster a bullpen that has been a weak spot recently.

The Yankees signed Maza to a minor league contract in July after he was designated a designated player by the Blue Jays.

The 32-year-old, who allowed Aaron Judge’s 61st home run in 2022, appeared in 35 games for the Blue Jays this year with a declining velocity and an 8.03 ERA.

But he had a 1.52 ERA in 69 games last season.

Mayza appeared in nine games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and posted a 2.16 ERA.

With Scott Efros, Nick Burdy and Ron Marinaccio all waiting for their chances at Triple-A, Mayza’s promotion came as something of a surprise.

Efros hasn’t pitched in the major leagues since the end of 2022 due to Tommy John surgery and back surgery, but he has pitched better recently since returning from rehab last month and being demoted to Triple-A.

The Yankees designated relief pitcher Eniel de los Santos for assignment on Wednesday, clearing a spot on the 40-man roster for Mayza.

The move was intended to put Will Warren on the active roster, but after Warren made a spot start against the White Sox, he was sent back down to Triple-A.
