Vice President Kamala Harris Rally in RaleighShe was scheduled to outline her economic policies as the Democratic presidential candidate in North Carolina on Friday afternoon.
In his speech, Biden, the incumbent vice president, listed several items he promised to achieve if he were to assume higher office, including “building the middle class” by lowering the cost of living — something the Biden-Harris administration has failed to achieve in the past few years in power.
Harris offered only a few details about how her administration plans to accomplish its new economic plan.
“Opportunity economy.”
“By virtually every measure, our economy is the strongest in the world,” Harris argued, pledging to be “committed to creating opportunity for the middle class.”
“Together, we will build what I call an opportunity economy,” Harris declared. “A strong middle class makes America stronger.”
Harris said she would release a more detailed economic strategy in the coming weeks, pledging to prioritize “lowering the cost of living,” including food, housing and health care.
After claiming that the US has the “strongest” economy in the world, Harris acknowledged that bread is now 50% more expensive in grocery stores than it was “pre-pandemic,” when former President Donald Trump was in office, but she argued that the higher prices are due to some grocery chains charging consumers exorbitant prices.
“As President, I will pursue bad actors,” Harris said, “and work to pass federal legislation to stop unfair food price gouging. My plan also includes new penalties for opportunistic companies who take advantage of the crisis to break the rules. And I will support small food businesses who are playing by the rules and moving forward.”
“We support a more competitive food industry because we believe competition is the lifeblood of our economy,” she continued. “More competition means lower prices for you and your family.”
Harris used her speech to sharply criticize Trump, arguing that his economic strategies would put more strain on Americans and accusing him of offering no “serious plan” to reduce the cost of living for middle-class Americans.
Harris praised the Biden-Harris Administration for cutting health care costs for prescription drugs and insulin for seniors and pledged to extend those same savings to everyone, further reducing health care costs, and said she also plans to “cancel” medical debt.
Vice President Harris blamed high real estate prices on a housing shortage and vowed to “cut red tape” at the state and local levels to build 3 million new homes and rental units for middle-class Americans during her first term. She also promised to provide first-time homebuyers with $25,000 in down payment assistance. She also said she would support legislation to crack down on investors who artificially inflate home prices.
According to Harris, her economic strategy will enable Americans to “keep more of their hard-earned money.” Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax CreditShe has pledged to expand the latter, giving families a $6,000 tax cut in the first year after a child is born.
“We will do this while reducing the deficit,” Harris declared.
The first presidential debate between Harris and Trump is scheduled for September 10 at 9 p.m. Eastern time in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
