Dem socialist senator rallies behind Harris’ price-fixing plan: ‘Important step forward’

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) on Friday endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris’ newly announced economic policy plan, calling it “bold and popular.”

“Is this everything I wanted? No,” he said in a statement. “Is this an important step towards making our country a more fair and just society? Absolutely.”

Sanders praised the proposal for “addressing the needs of working families” and confronting “the unprecedented corporate greed we’re seeing across America.”

Sanders has long described himself as a democratic socialist and is considered one of the most left-wing politicians in the United States.

Harris’ plan, unveiled by the campaign on Friday, includes an expansion of several policies implemented during the Biden-Harris administration, specifically targeting corporate “price gouging” in the food industry and calling for the first time to ban it in federal law.

It also significantly expands the child tax credit, allowing up to $6,000 in the first year of life, and extends existing prescription drug price caps to everyone, not just seniors.

Alongside measures to crack down on landlords, Harris’ economic platform also includes creating a $40 billion fund to help local governments build more housing.

“At a time when wealth and income inequality has never been greater, when the richest 1 percent are better off than they’ve ever been while 60 percent of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, Vice President Harris understands that we need to create an economy that works for everyone, not just those at the top,” Sanders said in a lengthy statement.

“We understand the need to stand up to the greed of the food and beverage industry, which is driving up food prices and making huge profits,” Harris added.

Critics disagree with Harris and Democrats’ conclusion that high prices are the product of corporate greed. Republicans were quick to denounce the plan, blaming the higher prices on spending plans that Biden and Harris have spearheaded throughout their administration.

“The price gouging they experienced is the work of Kamala Harris and Joe Biden.” Senator Tim Scott (Member of the Scottish Parliament) “When the federal government and Democrats spend trillions of dollars to artificially stimulate the economy, the net effect is higher inflation, higher interest rates, higher demand and lower supply,” he said in an interview Friday, per Fox News Digital.

“Right now, the report is that Kamala is proposing communist price controls. She wants price controls and if that would work I’d be all for it, but it’s not working. It’s actually having the exact opposite impact and effect,” former President Trump said at a news conference on Thursday.

The plan has also drawn criticism from a left-leaning columnist for the Washington Post, who wrote an opinion piece titled, “If They Call You a ‘Communist,’ Why Not Propose Price Controls?”
