Ipswich Town are back, baby! The Tractor Boys return to the big time pretty much where they left off. The final match of their doomed 2001-02 Premiership campaign was a 5-0 defeat against Liverpool at Anfield, and what do you know, they’re up against the very same club in their very next top-flight fixture, a mere 22 years on. That it’s on their own turf at Portman Road may not necessarily give them succour, given Liverpool beat them on it 6-0 that same relegation-haunted season … but if we’re going to bang on about history, it’s only fair to point out that the previous season in the Premiership, 2000-01, newly-promoted Ipswich drew 1-1 against Liverpool at home and beat them 1-0 at Anfield. So history either informs us or teaches us absolutely nothing, depending on which way you look at it. You’re welcome. Kick-off is at 12.30pm BST. It’s on!

Kieran McKenna speaks to TNT. “I’m excited… it’s a great opportunity for the club… I want to make the most of it… Calvin [Phillips] He’s a very experienced player and would be a good addition…Sammy [Szmodics] He is a goalscorer who takes his chances well and is an all-round hard worker…The team is improving steadily…We are still building the team…We are in a good position…We have to find a balance…We have to find ways to adapt…But we will keep our core which is to be brave and daring…We will press high and be aggressive…Other times we will be really compact…Be as brave as we can…It will be a big step up…We know Liverpool already have something great as a team…Arne [Slot] “There will be new patterns added… We have to deal with things collectively… I wanted to be the guy to lead a team in the Premier League… I feel like this is the right place… I’m very excited.”

Ipswich goalkeeper Ariyanet Muric is absent with a calf injury. Christian Walton came on as a substitute. Jacob Greaves and Liam Delap made their debuts, while fellow new signings Kalvin Phillips and Sammy Smodics were on the bench. “Apart from that it’s the core group we’ve had so far,” Kieran McKenna told TNT Sport. “Ten of our starting line-up are making their Premier League debut today but seven have been with us since League One.”

Manager Arne Sloot made his first big decision, opting for Jalel Quansah to pair with Birgin van Dijk at centre-back and dropping Ibrahima Konate to the bench. Diogo Jota, who scored a magnificent goal against Sevilla in pre-season, is preferred over Darwin Nunez up front, while Ryan Gravenberch could fill the gap left by Martin Zubimendi in midfield.

preamble

Ipswich Town are back! The Tractor Boys are back on the same big stage as they were last time out, losing 5-0 to Liverpool at Anfield in the 2001-02 Premier League final, and yet, a mere 22 years later, they will face the very same club in their next top-flight match. That loss to Liverpool on their home turf at Portman Road doesn’t necessarily inspire confidence. 6-0 The same season they were on the brink of relegation… but if we’re talking history, it’s fair to point out that the season before in the Premier League, newly promoted Ipswich drew 1-1 at home to Liverpool and won 1-0 at Anfield in 2000-01. So history, depending on how you look at it, can either inform us or tell us absolutely nothing. You’re welcome. Kick-off is at 12.30pm BST. It has begun!
