A journalist who made headlines for asking tough questions of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador denounced him and claimed that any future attacks on her would be the fault of him and his words. Mexican politicians ignored her with disinterest and asked if she was done.
During President Lopez Obrador’s morning press conference this week, Reina Hayde Ramirez claimed that the president’s divisive comments led to her being chased and yelled at by his supporters. She alleged that Lopez Obrador’s spokesman, Jesus Ramirez Cuevas, favored journalists who praised Lopez Obrador and tried to censor or shut out those who asked tough questions.
Ramirez showed a video on his cell phone in which various people were heard saying,There is Chayotera They surrounded her and chased her to Mexico City’s central square, where she yelled, “You’re a traitor,” and she claims police had to intervene.
Ramirez frequently asked tough questions of Lopez Obrador during his morning press conferences, leading to some tense exchanges between the two men that became a talking point in Mexico.
Ramirez said the incident took place in June when the country held presidential elections, and she claimed the issue had to do with President Lopez Obrador’s comments that journalists who question him are either oppositionists or paid mouthpieces for “conservative” politicians.
After she showed him the video, a visibly upset Lopez Obrador asked if that was the end of it and dismissed her concerns, insisting that journalists were free to express their opinions.
Ramirez’s allegations come at a time when various international press freedom groups have ranked Mexico as one of the most dangerous places for journalists, and most murders and attacks continue to go unpunished, as reported by Breitbart Texas.
