NYC Pedicab Drivers Accused of Frightening Tourists, Sexually Assaulting Riders

Pedicab drivers reportedly create an extremely violent atmosphere in New York City, a problem that has worsened in recent years.

The drivers are accused of terrorizing people and sexually assaulting passengers. New York Post Reported Sunday.

Their behaviour is said to be unsettling to those who see them, due to loud music, exorbitant prices, physical altercations with customers, disregard for traffic laws, and fights with competitors. Most of the drivers are from countries such as Tajikistan and Uzebekistan, the media reported.

Ralph Mendez, a doorman at the Sheraton Hotel on Seventh Avenue, post“They are like piranhas who just want money and they prey on tourists, guests and children,” he said, noting that the moment they turn down an offer, the drivers go crazy.

Two women were given a “free” taxi ride after a night out clubbing, but were allegedly groped by the driver once they got in. One of the victims later called police.

In 2009, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) began cracking down on bike taxi drivers. Accused CBS2 reported at the time that he was arrested for allegedly violating traffic laws.
