This week in Chicago, Democrats will officially welcome Kamala Harris as their presidential candidate. Just a few months ago, this would have seemed like an unlikely, if not inconceivable, scenario to many: Harris was a lackluster vice president whose last attempt at the presidential nomination fizzled out.
Now, things are very different. Celebrities are vying to endorse her and are genuinely excited about her entry into the race. She is said to be enthralling young voters and those who were not particularly keen on Joe Biden.
So what has changed?
Janelle Ross She began researching Kamala Harris’ life a few months ago, and the turnaround in the politician’s fortunes came as no surprise to her. Michael Safi She discusses why Harris has undergone a political transformation over the past two years, but she also delves into which of her life’s experiences — from being bused to a predominantly white school to her mother’s influence — have helped shape her thinking — and considers what her past can tell us about her future and approach to leadership.
