Republican presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump said Tuesday he would be “open to” giving Robert F. Kennedy Jr. a role in his administration if he wins the presidential election in November.
As previously reported by The Blaze News, RFK Jr.’s running mate, Nicole Shanahan, recently said the two 2024 presidential candidates are considering whether to stay in the race to “position themselves” as a third party, or to drop out and support Trump.
“If he is thinking of escaping, of course I am in favor of it.”
“There are two options we’re looking at: One is to stay and form a new party, but there’s a risk that Kamala Harris and Waltz could become president by either collecting votes from Trump or somehow collecting more votes from Trump,” Shanahan said in an interview on the “Impact Theory” podcast.
“Or we will step aside now and join forces with Donald Trump,” Shanahan continued. “We will step aside and explain to our supporters why we have made this decision.”
Shanahan said this was “not an easy decision,” but that what he’d heard recently from the Trump campaign had been “very positive.”
“I remain open to discussions with leaders of any political party to advance the goals I have pursued throughout my 40-year career and campaigns,” Kennedy said in a statement after the podcast interview aired on Tuesday.
He said his priorities include “stopping the spread of chronic disease, ending the war machine, purging corporate influence from our government, ridding the environment of toxic pollutants, protecting free speech, and ending the politicization of the executive branch.”
During Trump’s campaign rally in Michigan on Tuesday, CNN Kristen Holmes asked the former president about the possibility of RFK Jr. joining his cabinet.
“Have you considered what role he might have in your administration, and what that role would be?” Holmes asked Trump.
“Well, not yet, but I’ve always liked him, so it would be nice to have that support,” Trump said. Responded“I like him a lot. I respect him a lot.”
Trump added that he would “probably” consider RFK Jr. for a position in his administration.
“He’s a great guy. A very smart guy. I’ve known him a long time,” Trump continued. “I didn’t know he was considering deportation, but if he was considering deportation, of course I would be open to it.”
He said he was “honored” by RFK Jr.’s endorsement.
Asked if Republicans supported the decision to add RFK Jr. to his cabinet, Trump replied, “I like smart people, and Republicans like me.”
Donald Trump Jr. Glenn Beck On Wednesday, he said he was “open to and welcomes the idea of RFK Jr. taking a position in his father’s presidential administration.” He said RFK Jr. “could be a really great asset.”
“I think the idea of giving him some kind of role in some big three-letter organization or something and letting him destroy it is a great idea,” he said. “I think that’s what we need to do.”
