About 40 people Undecided representatives and their supporters They slept on the sidewalk outside Chicago’s United Center on Wednesday night, hoping the Democratic National Convention would allow a pro-Palestinian speaker to take the main stage before the convention concludes Thursday night.
“I didn’t come here to do a sit-in,” he insisted. Abbas Alawi“We’re just sitting here waiting for a phone call,” said the Michigan representative and leader of the Unfettered National Movement, which supports a ceasefire in Gaza.
The group noted that the parents of American hostage Hersh Goldberg were allowed to address the main audience at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday night, and hopes that Palestinian speakers will be given the same opportunity.
“We heard Hirsch’s story,” Alawieh continued, “and we were moved by the humanity of that story. We are Democrats, and our platform says that our party values all lives, all Palestinian lives equally, and so we believe we should have a Palestinian-American speaker on this stage.”
“We are sad to report that last night’s vote did not represent the voice of 32,908 Kentucky Democrats.”
Another Unfettered National Movement leader, Leila Elabed, the sister of far-left Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), went further, arguing that a pro-Palestinian chairman is the “minimum” the group expects from Democrats.
“This is embarrassing for those of us who believed the Democratic Party still had a voice,” Elavet said.
“Our values, our vote and our rightful place in the Democratic Party should not be taken for granted,” she said Monday night.
June Rose, an independent from Rhode Island, also called the pro-Palestinian chairman “the most [the DNC] “Yes, I can.”
“Meaningful policy change is needed.” Rose continued.“We Democrats cannot oppose Donald Trump’s fascism at home while supporting Benjamin Netanyahu’s genocide abroad.”
So far, the sit-ins have attracted stop-offs from prominent Democrats, including Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Summer Lee of Pennsylvania, and like-minded members of the UAW have offered their support.
“If we want to end the war in Gaza, we cannot look away or ignore the voices of Palestinian Americans within the Democratic Party,” the union said.
Convention officials allowed pro-Palestinian speakers to speak at smaller gatherings and events at the DNC but not on the main stage. As a result, as The Blaze News previously reported, members of a Muslim women’s group supporting Harris-Waltz formally disbanded and withdrew their support for the Democratic candidate.
The sit-ins began the day after 44 delegates voted “present” at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday. Daily Caller According to reports, the 44 delegates represent 13 states – Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio, Texas and Washington – and likely include most of the 36 delegates who are also members of the Uncommitted Movement.
But the Democratic National Convention held a virtual vote earlier this month, and Harris Double the votes of 1,966 delegates What is needed to secure the nomination.
