From costumes displayed in glass cases to historic campaign photos from Reagan’s presidential election, the filmmakers went to great lengths to create an immersive experience for audiences, evoking nostalgia for a period that has become almost legendary in the minds of Americans who lived through it.
Speaking before the screening, Quaid, who delivers a heartfelt performance as the feisty Zipper, spoke passionately about his love for Reagan, whom he calls his favorite president.
“It’s such an honor to play Ronald Reagan. This is my favorite movie I’ve ever been in,” he said. The right one “This country that’s been around for 40 years has been destroyed by this administration,” he said. “I think if you were born before 1985 you can see how great this country once was. Quaid also noted that Hollywood actors can thank President Ronald Reagan, who was president of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), for his efforts in creating a health insurance program that, in my opinion, is the best in the world, he said.
“He was a great man. He was a humble man. He was my favorite president, that’s for sure,” Quaid said of Reagan.
After dedicating the film to World War II veterans, including one in the audience, and to “the entire Greatest Generation,” Quaid ended his speech with a message of hope for Americans, urging them to “give your children a better world, because that’s what you want for them.”
Reagan The film is a love letter to the late president, taking the audience on an epic journey through decades of history (a big credit to production designer Chris Rose for seamlessly bringing this to fruition). Quaid’s Reagan sees the man from his days as an anti-Communist activist to his rise as a Hollywood star and his eventual rise into politics, as Governor of California and on to the White House. The film acts as a sort of “greatest hits” gallery of many iconic Reagan moments, from his “Evil Empire” speech to his assassination attempt and his historic “tear down this wall” declaration in West Germany.
True to Dennis Quaid’s point about America’s past greatness, the film wisely avoids cheap partisan attacks by portraying former Democratic House Speaker Tip O’Neill (masterfully played by Dan Lauria) as an honorable man who became a friend of President Reagan despite their political differences, harkening back to a time when Americans of different beliefs were able to embrace their differences.
As the end credits rolled, the audience was sure to shed tears and remember President Reagan’s great achievements. Future audiences will surely feel heartbroken when they watch this movie.
