Mariners explain reasoning behind firing manager Scott Servais: ‘Needed a new voice’

The Seattle Mariners have announced that they have fired Scott Servais, their manager for the past nine seasons, following a poor performance in the American League West.

The moves, which also included the firing of hitting coach Jarrett DeHart, came after the Mariners suffered an 8-4 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers that dropped them to .500 with a 64-64 record for the season.

With just over a month left in the regular season, Seattle is six games behind the Houston Astros for first place in the American League West and 7.5 games out of the American League Wild Card spot.

So the Mariners need some juice to come out of a slump in which they’ve lost eight of their last nine games, including being swept by the Dodgers.

The Mariners were 10 games up in the division lead on June 10, but have since slumped to 20-33, while the Astros got off to a terrible start but have bounced back since then.

“It’s actually unbelievable how quickly everything fell apart, from where we were in mid-June to where we are today,” president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said. Via ESPN.

“We all decided that this was what the organization needed. We needed to do something to create a different theme, a different atmosphere in the clubhouse. I’m not taking any flak for Scott here at all. I can’t praise him enough for what he’s done here, but I think we needed a new voice.”

The Mariners have the best ERA in MLB this season (3.53) as of Thursday, but the worst batting average (.216), three points behind the MLB-worst-placed Chicago White Sox on record.

Seattle made a shocking move at the MLB trade deadline by acquiring Randy Arozarena and Justin Turner, but initially won six of the nine games they had on the roster before suffering straight losses.

Players like JP Crawford, Mitch Gerber and Mitch Haniger haven’t performed well, and Jorge Polanco, who was expected to perform well as a switch hitter, has only been mediocre this season.

The Mariners have high hopes under new leadership in Dan Wilson, the team’s minor league coordinator and interim manager.

Servais compiled a 680-642 record in nine seasons as manager and made the playoffs just once, in 2022, when they lost to the Astros in the American League Series.
